KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Thursday night Kure Beach town leaders made it official during their swearing in ceremony.
Newly-elected Mayor Emilie Swearingen was the first to swear-in.
“It’s very exciting, I am just so glad so many people came out,” said Swearingen.
Swearingen said she looks forward to dealing with all types of new challenges, but she hasn’t abandoned an issue that most likely helped get her elected which is her opposition to offshore drilling.
“I plan on continuing that opposition all the way up to the congressional level,” said Swearingen.
Swearingen was joined by re-elected commissioner David Heglar and newcomer Joseph Whitley.
“Well I’ve been on the planning and zoning board for three years and there’s a lot of issues in the town, parking is one, beach re-nourishment,” said Whitley. “Whatever I can do to help the town.”
With the combination of experience and new perspectives on the commission, Swearingen said she is confident they’ll get a lot done for the people of Kure Beach.
“It is so good to get some new blood and some young blood participating in our community,” said Swearingen.
The last month Commissioner Steve Pagley resigned, now there is search for a person to fill his seat.
